A museum to come
11 outstanding sites proposed
1 site chosen for the new Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts
Following the vote against the Bellerive project on 30 November 2008, the cantonal government invited all of the Vaudoises communes, civil society and the general public to propose sites suitable for the construction of a new Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (MCBA).
At the end of a meticulous analysis based on documentation and expert assessment, which took into consideration a wide range of criteria for purposes of comparison, it was seen that each of the eleven sites studied offered remarkable promise. However, following the decision taken by the cantonal government, only one will host the new museum: the CFF locomotive depot beside Lausanne station, namely two buildings that will be progressively disused during the next few years – a hall built in 1911 and classed as a historic monument, and a section dating from the 1970s which may be destroyed and rebuilt to meet the requirements of the MCBA. The pair provide a generous interior space and excellent accessibility, and will contribute – thanks to the partnership between the Vaud State, the City of Lausanne and the Federal Railways – to a new urban dynamic to the west of the station.
